Ovarian cancer is the malignancy arising from ovarian cells that suffer from a malignant metamorphosis and grow in an untidy and unarranged way, accounting for about 3% of all cancers in women, and ranking eighth among most common types of cancers, except for skin cancer. Although it mainly develops in white-race women over 55 years of age who belong in a middleor-high social class, it can also be found in younger women. This type of cancer accounts for the fifth cause of death among women, and the highest cause of death from malignancies in the female reproductive organs, owing to the fact that when symptoms appear, the disease is generally in advanced stages.
El cáncer de ovario es un tumor originado a partir de células ováricas que sufren una metamorfisis maligna y crecen desordenada y descontroladamente, constituyendo alrededor del 3% de todos los tipos de cáncer en las mujeres, ocupando el octavo lugar entre los más comunes, con excepción del cáncer de piel. Si bien se desarrolla principalmente en mujeres mayores de 55 años de edad, de raza blanca y de clases sociales media y alta, también es posible observarse en mujeres más jóvenes. Este tipo de cáncer constituye la quinta causa de muerte entre mujeres y la mayor causa de muerte debido a neoplasias de los órganos reproductores femeninos, puesto que al manifestarse los síntomas generalmente se halla en etapa avanzada.
