Herniated lumbar disk

EnglishSpanish
A disk hernia is a protrusion of the nucleus pulposus through the anulus fibrosus. Herniation frequently occurs in the posterolateral region, hough it can also be seen along the medial line. Patients generally require medical assistance when the nucleus pulposus protrudes within the spinal canal or the neural foramen, pressing the nerve root. An intervertebral disk is made up of fibrocartilaginous tissue and forms the joint between the vertebral bodies. It adds to the mobility and stability of the vertebral column, as well as to the distribution of weight all along its length. Intervertebral disks are higher in the lumbar region, and their difference in height in its posterior or anterior parts results in physiologic curvatures of the column. The hydration of these disks is lost and their height reduced with aging.
