Gastroesophageal reflux disease

EnglishSpanish
Gastroesophageal reflux is the passing of the contents in the stomach to the esophagus. Approximately between 5% and 8% of adults in Western countries suffer from its symptoms. In many cases, it consists in a physiological process that can be rapidly reversed thanks to esophageal peristalsis and to the bicarbonate contents in the saliva. In other cases, however, this reflux can result in similar symptoms, without macroscopically damaging the mucosa, turning into a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux. The erosion of the esophageal mucosa, vulnerable to the prolongued action of the gastric acid, causes the cells making up the epithelium to change, thereby raising the possibility of significant complications. The esophageal mucosa is not protected by a mucus and bicarbonate barrier, as is the case with the stomach.
