Colorectal cancer refers to the disease located either in the colon or in the rectum. It is the most frequent oncological disease of the gastrointestinal tract, and also an important cause of death. In spite of the fact that its cause is still unknown, certain diseases or feeding habits may be considered as risk factors. Among its predisposing factors, the following could be mentioned: familial colonic polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease, aged above 50, familial antecedents of cancer, diets rich in animal fat or poor intake of vegetable fibers, and lack of physical exercise. Overweight, cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption are some habits that shall be taken into account. Prevention is crucial for an early detection of the disease, especially in those people who have a family history of cancer. Change of habits (diet, quit smoking, etc) are necessary not only once the disease had been detected but as a way to prevent it.
